OpenAI's New Report: Owner-Led Teams Are Handing Work to Agents
What happened
On September 30, 2026, OpenAI announced a partnership with America’s SBDC—the national network of Small Business Development Centers that serves about 1 million entrepreneurs a year—and published Small Businesses, Bigger Capabilities. In this first phase, through OpenAI Academy’s Community Trainer Program, OpenAI plans to train around 150 SBDC advisors, run hands-on workshops across participating networks (OpenAI's stated goal: reach at least 1,000 businesses in person), and co-create practical guides (marketing, operations, manufacturing, exporting, and government contracting are named as possible topics).
The same-day report says that in the week of September 9–15, around 4 million employees at firms with fewer than 500 people used OpenAI’s tools worldwide, and nearly one in five of those users worked at firms with fewer than 10 employees. In August, agentic output tokens from products like ChatGPT Work and Codex made up about two-thirds of the output tokens OpenAI measured for the firms in this report, up from about one-third in April 2026. In OpenAI's sample, finance and accounting, supply chain, legal and compliance, and marketing each accounted for at least three times as large a share of those firms' agent interactions as they did for larger firms—areas where a team often needs help without a dedicated specialist on staff.
OpenAI’s own examples include restaurant owners using ChatGPT Work to compare competitors’ menu prices before changing theirs, and an owner using it to research school districts and prepare outreach she reviewed and sent. Treat the usage numbers as OpenAI’s internal analysis of its own users (no published method for the measured cohort); they measure interactions and self-reported survey outcomes, not guaranteed ROI.
Who it helps
- Owners and managers who already dabble in ChatGPT but haven't picked one owned agent workflow. The report's numbers come from firms of about 500 people or fewer.
- Teams without a full-time finance, compliance, or marketing specialist who need capacity without a new hire.
- Advisors and tech-services firms coaching owner-led businesses through AI adoption who need a credible "why now" narrative plus a responsible rollout plan.
How to apply
- Pick one back-office or growth job nobody owns full-time (invoice follow-up, weekly cash brief, competitor price check, outbound research draft).
- Run it for two weeks in a tool you already pay for (ChatGPT Work / Codex / equivalent), with a human gate before any send, publish, or spend.
- Write three rules: what the agent may read, what it may draft, and what always needs your OK.
- Measure prep hours saved and error rate—not “tokens used.”
- If a local SBDC AI workshop lands near you, go for the practice reps; bring your one-job pilot so the session sticks.
How CerpaMedia can help
CerpaMedia helps business owners turn "we should use AI" into one owned workflow with approval gates. A Technology Strategy Call maps where agents beat chat for your stack and risk tolerance. Build configures permissions, custom rules, and a narrow pilot. Automation formalizes draft → review → approve loops so agents move work forward without sending or spending on their own.
