What happened
Three surveys published between Oct 1 and Oct 9 point the same way:
- The Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council's October Check Up (516 owners with 2 to 99 employees, fielded Sept 11–19) found 58% of the employers in the survey use AI agents regularly or occasionally, and another 14% are considering or planning to. Among owners holding steady or improving, 28% credit adopting technology such as AI.
- PYMNTS Intelligence's August growth monitor (533 U.S. businesses, August 2026) found 74% use AI at least occasionally. Among businesses whose revenue grew in 2025, 57% use it frequently, nearly double the 29% of flat-revenue businesses, even though both groups tried AI at about the same rate. PYMNTS notes this shows a connection, not proof that AI causes growth.
- Heartland Forward's "AI on Main Street" survey (691 owners) found 43% use AI, 70% of users say it helped their finances, and 81% say it lets them do more with the same staff.
Who it helps
Busy owners. In the PYMNTS data, 6 in 10 AI users produce more work without adding staff and 72% get tasks done faster. The most common uses are customer service and calls (58%), marketing (55%), bookkeeping and tax (54%), and sales (53%), the jobs owners usually pay staff or outside help to do. Skipping a hire was about four times as common as a layoff.
It isn't free money, though. 28% of users said AI cost more than expected, and about 22% had extra work from AI mistakes. And 23% of businesses gained customers who specifically want a person doing the work.
How to apply it
- Pick one job, not ten. Start with the task that eats the most hours each week, such as answering calls and emails, follow-ups, or bookkeeping prep.
- Use it every week. The surveys show the difference is regular use, not a one-time try.
- Set limits. Decide what the AI can do alone and what needs your OK, especially anything that touches money or customers.
- Keep people where customers want people. Use AI behind the scenes and say so proudly when a human handles the relationship.
- Measure it. Track tasks times minutes saved for two weeks, so you know whether it's paying for itself.
How CerpaMedia can help
If you'd rather have that first job set up and working in days instead of experimenting for months, that's what our AI Teammate Launch does: we set up two AI teammates on your own accounts, with clear limits, and fix them free for 60 days after the launch session until they save you at least 3 hours a week (measured as tasks × minutes saved). Current founding details are on the AI Teammate Launch page.
